The Canadian government has announced a significant expansion of the Parents and Grandparents Program (PGP) for 2025, increasing the number of sponsorship applications it will accept to 25,000, a notable jump from the previously planned 15,000.
This change aims to help more Canadian citizens and permanent residents reunite with their loved ones, reflecting the government's ongoing commitment to family reunification.
Key Changes for the 2025 PGP:
Increased Capacity: Canada will now process 25,000 sponsorship applications in 2025.This total includes applications submitted during both the 2024 and 2025 intakes, giving more families a chance to bring their parents and grandparents to Canada.
Lottery-Based Selection:The program will continue using a random lottery system to invite potential sponsors from the pool of interested applicants. This ensures fairness and equal opportunity for everyone who submits an interest to sponsor.
Processing Timeline:As of February 5, 2025, the estimated processing time for PGP applications remains around 24 months for applicants living outside Quebec.Quebec applications follow a separate process based on the province’s unique immigration rules.
Super Visa Option:For families not selected through the PGP lottery, the Super Visa program remains an alternative pathway. It allows parents and grandparents to visit Canada for up to five years per entry, with multiple entries permitted over a 10-year period, offering a long-term, flexible solution for family visits.
This expanded capacity is expected to create more opportunities for families to reunite while maintaining an efficient and organized selection and processing system.
