By Vagmi Journey | Start your journey with Vagmi Journey

Internationally trained physicians now have a promising new opportunity to practice medicine in Canada, thanks to a groundbreaking initiative by McMaster University and the Government of Prince Edward Island (PEI).

The newly launched PEI-McMaster Collaborative Hospitalist Fellowship is a one-year clinical training program in internal medicine designed specifically for International Medical Graduates (IMGs). This program not only provides hands-on Canadian medical experience but also opens a direct path to medical licensure in PEI.

Program Overview

Duration: 1 year (13 clinical training blocks)

Location:

12 blocks at McMaster University (Hamilton, Ontario)

1 block in Prince Edward Island

Objective: To prepare internationally-trained doctors for licensure and clinical practice in PEI

Commitment: Physicians must agree to practice in PEI for at least one year after completing the fellowship

Who Is Eligible?

To apply for the PEI-McMaster Fellowship, candidates must:

Be a Canadian permanent resident or citizen

Be international medical graduates (IMGs)

Meet additional requirements set by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of PEI

Preference will be given to IMGs eligible to write the Royal College Internal Medicine exam via the Practice Eligibility Route (PER)

Why This Matters?

This fellowship is part of PEI’s ongoing efforts to strengthen its healthcare workforce while creating sustainable pathways for skilled foreign-trained professionals. Inspired by the journey of Dr. Ali Abdullah, who transitioned from IMG to practicing physician in PEI after completing McMaster’s hospitalist program, this initiative offers a structured and supported path to integration.

According to PEI’s Minister of Health and Wellness, Mark McLane:

“By collaborating with McMaster University and the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Prince Edward Island, this initiative helps international physicians integrate into the Canadian health system while giving PEI a boost in our workforce.”
