Australia Introduces Key Change for Onshore Student Visa Applications – Effective January 1, 2025
Starting January 1, 2025, the Australian Department of Home Affairs will require international students applying for a student visa from within Australia to submit a Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE) instead of a Letter of Offer at the time of their application.
Key Details of the Change
New Requirement: Onshore student visa applicants must include a CoE with their application.
Purpose: This measure is designed to streamline the visa process and ensure stronger commitment from students to their selected courses.
Impacts of the Change
Invalid Applications:
Applications without a CoE will be deemed invalid and will not be processed.
Students submitting invalid applications will also be ineligible for an associated Bridging Visa.
Maintaining Visa Status:
Students must ensure they have a valid CoE before their current visa expires.
Without a valid visa, students must either leave Australia or apply for an alternative visa.
Important Points to Note:
Applications Lodged Before January 1, 2025:
Applications submitted before this date using a Letter of Offer will not be affected.
Exemptions:
This new requirement does not apply to:
Foreign Affairs or Defence-sponsored students.
Students on secondary exchange programs.
Visa Integrity Measures:
The Australian government is also tightening regulations to reduce "visa hopping." Restrictions have been imposed on applying for a student visa onshore while holding certain visa types, such as:
Visitor Visas.
Temporary Graduate Visas.
What Students Should Do
Obtain a CoE from their chosen educational institution before lodging a visa application.
Plan ahead to maintain lawful status, ensuring current visas do not expire before acquiring a CoE.
This change reflects Australia's commitment to enhancing the integrity and reputation of its international education sector while addressing concerns like visa misuse. If you need guidance on obtaining a CoE or exploring alternative visa options, feel free to ask!
