Canada’s New Express Entry Education Category: These Are the Candidates Receiving ITAs

Canada’s New Express Entry Education Category: These Are the Candidates Receiving ITAs

Canada's Express Entry system introduced a new category-based selection stream in February 2025,focusing on education occupations to address labor shortages in the education sector. This initiative aims to invite qualified professionals in specific educational roles to apply for permanent residency.

Eligible Occupations in the Education Category:To qualify under the education category, candidates must have at least six months of full-time, continuous work experience (or an equivalent amount of part-time experience) within the last three years in one of the following National Occupation Classification (NOC) codes:

Secondary school teachers(NOC 41220)

Elementary school and kindergarten teachers(NOC 41221)

Early childhood educators and assistants(NOC 42202)

Instructors of persons with disabilities(NOC 42203)

Elementary and secondary school teacher assistants (NOC 43100)

These occupations span various Training, Education, Experience, and Responsibilities (TEER) levels, from TEER 1 (requiring a university degree) to TEER 3 (requiring a college diploma or apprenticeship training).

Candidate Profile and Selection Process:Candidates interested in this category must Create an Express Entry profile: Meet the eligibility criteria for one of the three Express Entry-managed programs:

Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP)

Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP)

Canadian Experience Class (CEC)

Demonstrate relevant work experience: Have at least six months of continuous, full-time work experience in one of the eligible education occupations within the last three years.

Meet language proficiency requirements: Provide valid language test results demonstrating proficiency in English or French.

Obtain a Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score: Based on factors like age, education, work experience, and language proficiency.

Category-based draws often have lower CRS score cut-offs compared to general draws, increasing the chances for candidates in targeted occupations to receive Invitations to Apply (ITAs) for permanent residency.

Addressing Labor Shortages in Education:

The introduction of the education category responds to significant labor shortages in Canada's education sector. A 2024 consultation highlighted that early childhood educators and assistants, elementary school and kindergarten teachers, and teacher assistants are among the most in-demand roles .

By targeting these occupations, Canada aims to attract skilled educators to support its educational institutions and address the growing demand for qualified teaching professionals.

If you have experience in one of the eligible education occupations and meet the Express Entry requirements, this new category offers a promising pathway to Canadian permanent residency.
