Canada's Express Entry STEM category underwent significant changes in February 2025,affecting eligibility for many professionals.

Updated Eligibility Criteria for the STEM Category (2025):

To qualify for a STEM-targeted Express Entry draw in 2025, you must:

Meet General Express Entry Requirements:Be eligible under one of the three Express Entry-managed programs.

Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP)

Canadian Experience Class (CEC)

Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP)

Maintain a valid Express Entry profile with a competitive Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score.

Possess Relevant Work Experience:

Have at least 6 months of full-time, continuous work experience (or equivalent part-time experience)within the past 3 years in one of the eligible STEM occupations.

This experience can be gained either in Canada or abroad. 

Align with an Eligible Occupation:

Ensure your primary occupation matches one of the 11 eligible STEM occupations as defined by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) in 2025. 

2025 STEM Occupation List:

In February 2025, IRCC streamlined the STEM category, reducing the total number of eligible occupations from 24 to 11.

The current list includes:

Architecture and Science Managers (NOC 20011)

Civil Engineers (NOC 21300)

Mechanical Engineers (NOC 21301)

Electrical and Electronics Engineers (NOC 21310)

Industrial and Manufacturing Engineers (NOC 21321)

Geological Engineers (NOC 21331)

Cybersecurity Specialists (NOC 21220)

Civil Engineering Technologists and Technicians (NOC 22300)

Mechanical Engineering Technologists and Technicians (NOC 22301)

Electrical and Electronics Engineering Technologists and Technicians (NOC 22310)

Insurance Agents and Brokers (NOC 63100) Notably, several tech-related roles, such as software developers and data scientists, have been removed from the STEM category in 2025.

How to Verify Your Eligibility?

To determine if you qualify:

Identify Your NOC Code:Visit the Government of Canada's NOC website and search for your job title to find the corresponding NOC code.

Match Job Duties:Ensure that your work experience aligns with the main duties and lead statement of the identified NOC code

Confirm Inclusion in the STEM List:

Check if your NOC code is among the 11 eligible STEM occupations listed above

Assess Express Entry Eligibility:Verify that you meet the criteria for one of the Express Entry-managed programs and maintain a competitive CRS score.
